Good and not so good: The vacation edition

We’re back from Atlantic City! No, we didn’t gamble away the birds. I read LJ nearly to skip=200 and gave up–let me know if there’s anything you absolutely don’t want me to miss. There are a couple of conversations floating around that I want to get back to.

Herewith, The List:

Good:
–Vacation was extremely relaxing.
–The bus trip was smooth and uneventful.
–Our room at the Hilton was palatial, compared to previous stays at the Irish Pub Inn: king-sized bed, frigid air conditioning, cable tv, two sinks and a tub with pulsating jets in the bathroom.
–I bought lots of fabulous clothes for cheap.
–The weather was agreeable, with temps in the eighties and fairly low humidity; I only got a wee bit of sunburn above the neckline of my shirts, and perhaps a little color on my arms.
–We heard a mysterious songbird in the vicinity of the historic A.C. Convention Center; I don’t know what it was, but it was small and brownish and had a beautiful, complex song.
–I had my two favorite dishes at the Irish Pub, where we ate our dinners: shepherd’s pie and fish’n'chips.
–I also had a Guinness with one dinner and really enjoyed it.
–We bought good-smelling stuff at Lush.
–I found a new plush friend at the Rainforest Cafe gift shop: Cornelia. She is a rhinoceros, and she is grumpy.
–Our new futon had arrived when we got home. Our neighbor helped upasaka carry it up to our apartment, and it is soooo comfy.
–Today is my payday. *g*

Not So Good:
–We had rather less money to spend than usual on account of a) staying at the Hilton instead of the Irish Pub Inn and b) deciding to buy a new futon for our bed just a week or so before leaving.
–I discovered I can’t hoof up and down the Boardwalk as much as I used to, and we spent money on taking the jitney bus back and forth.
–The jitney has less shock absorption than any vehicle since, oh, the covered wagon. Ow.
–The hotel room had cable, but no Sci Fi Channel or Cartoon Network. Pooh. We wound up watching a lot of Discovery Channel and PBS. And most of a Voyager episode and Sean Connery in Thunderball on Spike TV.
–The futon is great, but after two hours at home in bed, we started itching again: Ergo, the problem is the room and not the bed.
–We’re probably going to rearrange half the apartment tomorrow (if not three-quarters).

In conclusion:
–Our vacation jaunt was a fine thing.
–We will find some way to avoid sleeping in the Room of Great Itching.
–We needed a new futon to sleep on anyway. Now to buy some pillows….
–I have been motivated to buy more of the sort of clothing I really want to wear, like the vaguely Indian/Persian tunic and pants I bought at the Shoe Stop.
–Today we got airmail from India about the nun we are sponsoring through the Tibetan Nuns Project! I will try to scan her picture and upload it soon.
–The birds missed us as much as we missed them, and vice versa.
–Sometimes the best part about vacation is coming home.

Good and not so good

Seeing the new Indiana Jones movie on Independence Day, during a matinee, with an audience composed of people between forty and sixty years old:  Pretty damned good.  Seriously, even if Ford looked a little grim and haggard at times, that was the most fun I’ve had at a movie in ages.  Jim Broadbent, John Hurt, and Cate Blanchett with a sword and a movie-Russian accent? Spielberg directing and a John Williams score? come on, how can you go wrong?

Going shopping at Wegman’s after the movie, slipping on a puddle of milk, and doing something unspeakable to my knee: DOUBLEPLUS UNGOOD.  It still hurts a lot this morning, although the swelling has gone down.

Ordering your tickets at Fandango.com and having them pop out of a little machine when you get to the cinema: Zowie.   Gonna do that next time, too, yes.

Listening to Car Talk on Saturday morning: One of life’s little good things.

A cook-out at my mother-in-law’s this afternoon with all my nearest and dearest: Priceless. Looking forward to seeing everybody later.

The second Hellboy movie opening next week, and the new Batman the week after that: Heath Ledger, we hardly knew ye. I can’t remember the last time there were so many movie I wanted to see in one summer.  Probably not since I was a teenager.

Love to all!
